At Lynx Fire & Security, we understand the pressing need to have reliable fire alarm systems in place for any commercial business. We offer fire alarm installations across the Midlands – including but not limited to Corby, Kettering, and Peterborough.
Having a fire alarm in your business is not optional, it is a legal requirement to ensure safety standards are met and that your property is as protected as possible.
The Importance of Commercial Fire Alarms
It may seem out of the realm of possibility that a fire could ever happen to you and your business; fires are unpredictable and should not be left to chance. There are a variety of different reasons why a fire alarm is important to have in any commercial business:
Early Detection
Early detection and warning systems can help reduce the risk of injury and death during a fire, allowing individuals to evacuate quickly before there’s any real danger.
A Legal Requirement
Having a fire alarm in place isn’t optional for any business, it’s a legal requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Not having this measure in place can risk a fine for your business.
Minor penalties can be anything up to £5,000, while major penalties can result in unlimited fines and up to two years in prison. It’s not worth the risk!
Cost-Effective
Most insurance companies require businesses to have a fire alarm system, so not having one could invalidate any claims and be expensive for your business. Additionally, having one could potentially reduce insurance costs, depending on your insurance provider, due to it being a legal requirement.
When Should My Alarm be Tested?
Fire alarms should be tested weekly by a designated person, often someone deemed “responsible” for this task. This could be anyone from an employer to a landlord so make sure you’re aware of who is responsible for your business’ fire safety.
During these weekly tests, one manual call point should be activated to check that the alarm sounds and that the system transmits the signal to the control panel. It is important to note that different call points should be tested each week to ensure they all work.
Professional Testing and Servicing
In addition to your own weekly tests, you should also have a professional service every six months (minimum) to further ensure compliance and employee safety. This inspection is more detailed, going beyond these weekly tests by ensuring the system's components are working and that your fire alarm is completely functional.
Lynx can service your business’ fire alarm as a part of our services and maintenance package. Our maintenance includes 12 months access to our out-of-hours engineers and callouts at a reduced rate, meaning you’re getting good value for your money.
Recording Fire Alarm Tests
Any tests made on your fire alarms should be logged in a fire safety logbook. This should include information regarding the date, time, location of the activated call point and any issues or faults found within this test.
It is also important to note that any additional testing should be conducted alongside these tests if any modifications or repairs are made to your alarm system to further ensure functionality.
